More troops for Iraq

The Banshees are rallying. Howard is sending more troops to Iraq and tomorrows press is going to be a maelstrom of wailing. The ABC and SBS will be besides themselves but in spite of MSM’s fight to win the war for the terrorists the fight must go on. Japan welcomes Aussie troop plan Their primary task will be providing security for the Japanese engineering and support forces rebuilding roads and schools in the Al Mutthanna province of Southern Iraq. Labor opposes troop plan Kim Beasley, appeasing the Labour Left, made some sort of unclear statement about how Labour had said that we wouldn’t send anymore troops. He used the term ‘Australia’s position’ but I think he meant ‘The ALP’s position’.
“Australia’s position has been made, I thought, amply clear to our allies over the course of the last couple of years and that is, they have seen the upper levels of Australia’s engagement.
Why is it that people think war strategies don’t change? By definition, plans do change and this case I guess the Dutch troops just got sick of no drugs and having to wear their hair short to accomodate battle helmets. Greens, Dems slam plan Sigh! Bob Brown, in a brief visit to Earth, just gets it all wrong.
Senator Brown said in Perth: “The reason the UK and Japan aren’t sending more (of their own) troops is because it would create an uproar in London or Tokyo.”
I would have thought it was because we actually have so few troops in theatre that just maybe the US and the UK said something along the lines of ‘Listen! The Dutch are pulling the plug. How about you help a bit?’
“John Howard never told voters he would be sending 450 more troops to Iraq, never indicated that in the election campaign,” he said.
The need hadn’t arisen then you dropkick.
PRIME Minister John Howard misled voters at the last election by letting them believe Australia’s involvement in Iraq would be scaled down, Greens Senator Bob Brown said today.
A bit of wishful think there Bob. Your life may revolve around refusing to help in the war against terror and rallying your dreadlocked troops against capitalism but others realize that situations change and when they do, so do requirements. I look forward to tomorrow mornings ritual reading of the Australian. Should be fun.

  • I just don’t know how to express my gratitude for having a REAL ally like Australia. As I’ve often said, Americans and Aussies share so much in heritage that it doesn’t surprise me we share the same outlook.

  • Some of the peoples motives for pulling out of Iraq seems like an attempt to for fill there own prophecies of another Vietnam.

  • Thanks mates, for the additional assistance!

  • I sense a Camry driving nudist circling

  • Bloody hell murph my screen covered in coffee know.

  • G’day,

I have no problem with us sending more troops but gee whiz , shouldn’t it really be the Japanese who look after their own people? I know their consitution forbids them sending troops into a war zone but perhaps its about time Australia, the USA etc encourges the Japanese to look at their consitution.

  • Ralph,

I agree but I think changing the Japanese constitution will take a while.

  • I don’t see any problem with Aussie troops going to Iraq to protect Japanese engineers, nor, I bet, do any of the troops.

The furore that arose when that idiot who runs the RSL approved the proposal that Japanese troops train in Australia came from those who deeply respect the feelings of the surviving POWs and their families, and the effect that would have on the old Diggers of seeing Japanese troops on Australian soil.

The decision to commit 1 Bde is good pragmatic decision by the Government, it will cement good relations with our neighbours for years to come.

And, the present Digs in 1 Bde are elbowing each other out of the way to be on the list to go!

If I was a praying man, I would thank God daily that the fool Latham never got the job of advancing Australia.

  • I have always held to the belief expressed by Cromwell in the English Parliament in 1647, “When we became soldiers, we did not cease to be citizens!”. It seems however from recent experience that we are indeed our own breed. How good it is to feel that one is amongst friends here.

Finally a site and gathering which seems to gel with what the diggers of the day believe. After posting several points on the ABC’s “Tour of Duty” Forum and seeing some of the responses and comments made by others, I have even less faith in people’s common sense (apparently not so common). It is perhaps ironic that those opposed to the additional troop deployment, those objecting to the endangerment of our service personnel and the continuance of this “illegal” war are not interested in the views of today’s diggers. I would have thought they have as much right as any to be considered and more knowledge of the issues at hand.

  • ” I would have thought they have as much right as any to be considered and more knowledge of the issues at hand. ”

Jesus no, Dave, the last thing the ABC crowd want to see or hear is the informed opinions of the people involved. they are already sure of the truth.

  • Frothing at the keyboard yet Naill? Posted an acerbic response on your site and feel vindicated?
Anyway, the point is there isn’t a damn thing the hippies can do about it, so ignore them. If only the idiot electorate were as clever as the Naill’s of the world.
