Unions must be auditable

A letter in Last Post in The Australian this morning underlines what is wrong with the debate on Gillard and the unions misappropriation of members funds. Until Unions are subject to the same public scrutiny as Company Directors then we are getting no where.
I wonder what those who regularly call for Labor to distance itself from union slush funds and unions in general, think about the Liberal Party’s close ties with big business and lobbyists seeking special treatment? D. J. Fraser, Mudgeeraba, Qld

Would that be close ties with big business where the Directors are audited and present open books on expenditure and income to public scrutiny? Your point is irrelevant until Unions are also publicly accountable for expenditure of their member’s money. Both sides use lobbyists but only the ALP and their union mates misdirect funds without telling their members.

  • I personally find it amazing that it is considered routine for union leaders to extort money from companies and divert that money into slush funds for the re election of officials (see statement by J.Gillard to S&G internal inquiry). if I was a union member and we accept that extorting money from companies is an acceptable practice, then I’d want that money to be going into the union, not into promoting the careers of specific union officials. Throw the whole HSU(E) debacle in and there needs to be a royal commission into union corporate governance, and the funny thing is that, whilst it will be of great long term benefit to rank and file members, it will never be done by the labour party.

  • John Van Krimpen

and in trot the politically correct brigade.

I ever liked Pickering and cartoonists in general barring Leunig.

I noted when I read that opinion piece earlier ol Labor Syvret hasn’t got comments turned on for the piece.

The old PC defence, it’s a beauty, now it’s being used to cover up theft and extortion.

  • “to cover up theft and extortion”
Pickering is an expert on theft and extortion – he’s had plenty of practice.
Until his attacks on Gillard, he was a forgotten – a has-been, suffering from relevance syndrome.
He was a one trick pony as a cartoonist. Since then he’s made a living out of ripoffs – http://kangaroocourtofaustralia.com/2012/08/19/larry-pickering-who-ripped-of-15million-in-a-betting-software-scam-claims-to-be-investigating-julia-gillard-for-the-awu-fraud-scam/
Now, using the time-honoured principle of “any publicity is good publicity”, he’s building a profile. I wonder what his next scam will be?

    • Pickering is a crook, but all he has done here is latch onto the work being done by legitimate journalists. he has the advantage I guess that the Govt can’t pressure his employers into silence and sackings.

Pickering is the distraction that a profoundly dishonest Govt desperately need.

  • If he’s as good as you say, he’ll be looking for a safe Labor seat and the Prime Ministership.

  • Numbers now go across to Pickerings site and wave your naughty finger at Larry.

The leaks etc are all Labor and FOI. Old school union leaders are sick of smarties, seems my best reading of the leaks. Pickering has the docs.

Me I am following it because of the big fat bastard gas tax.

All cartoonists have a style, a gimmick if you like, his is sexual and the PM’s weakness is her morality in respect to marriage, guess that’s why people leaked to him.

Is her history Germaine, yes, the affairs were deceitful to the spouses she was not involved with.

All you ever do is argue away from the main point, the discussion is about Gillard, AWU monies missing and for me her lies. Labor and Unionists are behind the leaks, if the LNP are behind this you have to know where.

I wont feed you in future you misdirecting troll.

  • Bit of a puzzle as to how a “has been, one trick pony” can win four Walkleys and a Churchill Fellowship.

  • Good luck with your comment on Dallas (D J) Fraser’s letter Kev.

He has been banging on in the Gold Coast Bulletin and the Gold Coast Sun about the wickedness and deviousness of everything that is not Labor for as long as I can remember.

The first or second sentences invariably identify him, as can be seen from the opening of his letter in today’s Sun:

“What a shame Anna Bligh will never receive the credit she rightfully deserves. Not only is the state poorer for her unceremonious exit from Queensland politics but her husband Greg Withers has been lost to the public service…..”.

Is time spent in a signals squadron that disorienting?
