Finally they get it

FOREIGN Minister Bob Carr has told a gathering of 40 non-government organisations in Canberra that their rhetoric about asylum-seekers is out of date, unhelpful and won’t be accepted by the Australian people.

In the meeting on Thursday, Senator Carr told the leaders of more than 40 organisations that the old rhetoric about human rights and asylum-seekers no longer described the reality of Australia’s situation.

Instead, Sri Lankans, Iranians and people of many nationalities with no genuine claims to refugee status were coming to Australia by boat. This, he said, was now a sophisticated and well-financed illegal immigration issue. The numbers, at 3000 a month, were intolerably high, Senator Carr said.

This is amazing – finally, after 6 years someone from the ALP has finally stated publicly what us conservative pundits and most of the public have known for all of that time.  What Carr didn’t say is we, the ALP are responsible for the whole sorry mess, for the death of hundreds and hundreds of illegal immigrants and we apologise profusely to the Australian people for our inept management. Failing that he could try and do something about the problem but I guess the ALP are too busy playing “pick the Leader”  with brief cross-overs to “Abbott will ruin the country” to do anything the public expect ofthem. 82 days to go – how much more damage can they do?

  • Finally  Bob Carr, who I’m not a big fan of, has stated the bleeding obvious, he must be shoring up some sort of brownie points for his biography. Supposedly one of the more educated of a sorry lot, he waits until the bell tolls for this disgraceful rabble, to tell us what we have known for years. They have been told this time and time again over the last 6 years and even more over the last 3 years, but the ALP, because of pigheadedness, would do nothing about it. I hope that when it comes to the time for an apology to the world in general, that it rests squarely on the shoulders of the Australian Labor Party to take the blame, not the Australian people.

  • Toowoomba shows Australia how it should be.
I’m proud of my city – ashamed of my country.
Refugee policy in this country is bipartisan crap.

    • Things like that are happening all over Australia but it’s not the point and I’m not surprised you don’t get it. We are being taken for  a ride by opportunists who seek our access to our generous nature without bothering about refugee procedures.  You want to come to my house and enjoy my hospitality?  You ask…you don’t arrive and demand access.

From a border security perspective if one person crosses the line illegally the government has  failed in its duty of care to the nation.

    • ah yes, Toowoomba, I can’t really see why “gullible” is something for the rest of Australia to aspire to, though I too would be proud of people who are prepared to walk. not actually DO anything useful for anyone. just walk. the perfect example of the ineffectual dolts too clueless to know they are being taken for a ride (metaphorically) by economic queue jumpers and too stupid to be able do anything to actually help the real refugees displaced by these opportunists.
But finally some common ground – I can also see why you would be ashamed of your country, however you should remember that Wilkie is only one MP of many – shameful, gutless, lying piece of shit that he is, and, ALP, independents and Greens excluded for obvious reasons, we can be proud of most of the rest so perhaps you shouldn’t be too hard on the whole country.

      • Ah yes.  You have identified one strange, mentally disturbed woman and used her to paint all Aussies as racists.

Finding fault with the open borders does not indicate a lack of compassion or a racist attitude.  It merely indicates we as a nation don’t like being taken for fools.

      • The point about dog whistles is that, if you can hear it, YOU are the dog.
You, numbers are the one with the race problem, you hear the ‘whistle’ everywhere – the rest of us don’t, you have a problem. seek help.
