Australia to help Thailand fight terror

Senator Vanstone has announced that Australia will help Thailand with new counter-terrorism and identity fraud measures and said cooperation between Australia and Thailand was important for the border protection of both nations because it would reduce the opportunity for terrorists to enter either country.

Senator Vanstone also announced, during her tour of the Suvarnabhumi Airport, Bangkok’s new airport, increased levels of training cooperation to assist Thai documentation examiners.

Good. I’ll be transitting through Bangkok in September on the way to Cambodia and would like to feel secure enough to have a night on the town re-visiting old haunts from my time there in the 70s.

Thanks, Amanda.

Does anyone know if the Jazz Bar in Patpong is still trading?

  • i live in bangkok at the moment and as far as i can tell patpong is not really the super happening place it once was.. more for tourists who just know the name…. also now full of hawkers selling all kinds of crap and very hard to walk though. the more happening western catering nightlife places are sukhumvit 4 (nana entertainment plaza) and soi cowboy. sukhumvit 33 also worth seeing. the place to read up on these is http://www.stickmanbangkok.com

  • Thanks for the tip Kinch, I would have a fear of walking through Patpong these days lest I be recognized and my apparent seedy behaviour and dshonourable intentions be communicated back to the home base. Good local cousine could be in order.

  • then do what sun tzu (actually pronounced sun zee for reasons too boring to go into) would do – walk through sukhumvit 33 instead :). was petchaburi road a happening place in your vietnam days? when i scoot along it i see lots of old grey concrete hotels obviously all thrown up late 60s / early 70s. september going to be swampy wet… your 4×4 experience might come in useful on cambodian roads. anyway, general consensus is that beer lao is the best beer in this part of the world. bit hard to find in thailand… cambodia not sure.

  • Smart guy, sun tzu. Yes, Petchaburi Rd rings a bell. In the 70s I stayed at the Asia Hotel and worked at the then called National Intelligence? Centre (I think)…situated some distance past the Palace. I didn’t go there on R&R so I’m not too familiar with the old grey concrete hotels (unless the Asia qualifies).I brought two one carat rubies from “Honest Sam” (true name..shop in foyer of Asia Hotel) who lived up to his name as they were both worth a bucket when I got them valued and set in Oz. Busy times and happy times….I remember the Thai people with affection.

Swampy wet in September raises problems as we are going to Cambodia to continue work on a pepper plantation we are setting up for the locals in a village where my mate’s son has some interest. We hope for seed money from the UN and on this trip are doing ground works …Should be interesting.

  • Kev
Any response from “murph” re Kiwis down in the bush?

  • Rick,
No. I think he’s planning to live overseas for a year. He hasn’t answered tele messages or emails.

  • Bugger.
    It’s important.

  • I’ve sent another email. I’ll let you know if I get an answer

  • the asia hotel on phayathai road is still there and probably not complaining as it’s got a skytrain station in front of it which can’t be all bad for business. must have been good to have seen the world back then when everybody in asia who wanted to sell you something was called sam! hong kong still has sam the tailor (aka manu melwani). anyway very interested to see what u post about life in cambodian village later.
