Cattlemen rolled

Obviously 4 Corners and PETA are now running our international trade as the Government leap in to kill the live cattle export business in response to a TV show. Several hundred million dollars at risk of being lost to the industry but Senator Ludwig said he was confident the industry would bounce back before the end of the six-month ban. Based on what? I’m all for treating animals humanely but I don’t think our cattlemen should be fined 300 million dollars because people in another country don’t stun the cattle before slaughter. Given the chance, maybe we could’ve offered advice to the Indon companies and pushed to lift their standards within a certain time frame but the Government have jumped so quickly with their six month ban that everyone, Indons, cattlemen and our economy, are losers. In my humle opinion the ALP are simply buying votes from radical Greenies that would never vote Coalition anyway. To all those guys and their families about to loose their livelihood, be happy that it is being done for a good cause – re-election of the ALP.

  • Strange world isn’t it. I guess if I bought a rabbit at a pet shop, took it home and kicked it to death before skinning, cleaning and eating it the Government would close down the pet shop and tell me I could no longer eat rabbit.
Similar to a pub supplying liquor to a customer who drinks it on the premises, leaves and a couple hours later commits some form of transgression. The coppers ask where he was drinking and then issue a penalty notice to the licencee for supplying liquor to, or suffering drunks on the premises.
It must be the new Australian way. Transgressors/perpetrators are no longer to blame for anything.

You must feed the hungry beast (the media).
Every politician in this country does it – refer Abbott “the sky is falling – we’re going to be taxed to extinction” or Gillard “the sky is falling – the seas are rising”.
Unfortunately, the hungry beast has a very primitive brain, and responds only to images that evoke the most primal responses, fear, disgust etc.
Lindsay Tanner has a point – see “Sideshow”.

The bottom line in relation to the beef export issue is the old adage about never standing betwen a cow cockie and a quick quid. This shonky trade has been going on for yonks – and many blind eyes have been turned. The MLA needs a bomb under it. Unfortunately the decent operators are being tarred with the same brush as the crooks.

  • ‘Shonky trade’ and ‘turning a blind eye’is not what comes to my mind. Surely the only problem is it got on 4 Corners and a host of people who have no idea how the world works and how their steak gets on their plate in the first place, make some noise for a day or two. PETA nutcases stir the pot and the government, seeing some votes in it, respond.

If 4 Corners went to an Australian abattoir and filmed the animals last walk they could, with clever editing and an agenda, like they had in this piece, create the same response.

Something nothing really but the ALP would’ve picked up some votes from nutcases who believe that animals bred for food are higher up the food chain than humans.

Wouldn’t have picked up any votes from the rural regions though…not they have many there anyway.

And no…I don’t believe in cruelty to animals but this is an abattoir after all.
