Australia under attack!

Long-range American bombers will be able to drop live bombs on an Australian training range in the Northern Territory under a key plan announced today. The training initiative between two allies prompted this letter to the Editor.
What depths of submissive deference to the superpower has us bending over to let George W. Bush’s Stealth bombers bang up the Northern Territory? Have we really got so little national pride as to let the US bomb Australian soil? Daele Healy Brisbane, QLD
Australia and the US have been training together in the US and here in Australia for over half a century. It’s no accident that our respective forces can work together as it takes a lot of hard work, planning and training to achieve force compatability. Yet somehow Daele (I bet he thanks Mum and Dad for that name) turns it into something reminiscent of the Japs bombing Darwin in 1942. Sometimes I think it a pity that the ADF can’t pick and choose who they protect. We could set up an area in central Australia (or maybe the Northern Territory) where all idiots of Daele’s class could go and live in peace to conduct there sit-ins, have continuous live feeds to a local TV station especially set up for those who enjoy protest marches and with a local newspaper, distributed locally only, dedicated to their thoughtless letters. Let the rest of us get on with what has to be done.

  • Beyond ridiculous. The CM letters page plumbs new depths each day.

Last week we had some silly slag getting her tits in a twist because her commuting experience (to and from Auchenflower) had been disrupted by…wait for it…John HoWARd and his **shriek** illegal war **shriek** in Iraq…

  • daele is a female. nice assumption though moron.

did you see that the smh cartoonist had a nice poem:

    i love a sunburnt country
    an american bombing range
the old land of the gum tree
    how very sad and strange

  • I’ve never heard of the christian name Daele, male or female, so it’s hardly moronic to get it wrong although if I was addressing the person concerned I would apologise for the understandable error.

How very sad and strange. You quote a cartoonist!! How moronic of him/her and you to think such childish prattle has merit.

  • A man who criticises a person’s name (and their parents for choosing it)
is hardly in a position to accuse others of being childish.
(Incidentally those parents you criticised were a vietnam veteran and an army nurse.)
I am happy to debate and discuss defence policy
(for example that the Americans do not share stealth bomber technology
with Australia – so it is misleading of you to characterise this as just another
joint training exercise). But Kev you do not seem to be interested in debating
the issues, you seem to be interested in insulting people you know nothing about.
And your suggestion that I am one of the Australians who in your opinion does not deserve the protection of the ADF I find really worrying.

  • thanks kev. i think you prove my point by admiting you have never heard of a male christian name but asusming that it must be a male.

and no apologies from me for thinking that some of the most incisive poignant comments tend in our newspapers tend to be in pictorial form.

So now you are on site I apologise to you about the crack about your name but not about the general thrust of the post.

The fact that the US doesn’t share stealth technology with us, or with anyone else in the world for that matter, is not an arguement to deny them use of our land in joint training exercise.

The only valid arguement to stop this type of activity is if you hate the US and thankfully the majority of Australians and the stated policies of both major parties support the alliance.

Your point of view is anti-US as will be any retort you make on this site.

    Mark

I can understand your position here Mark, SMH cartoonists have an anti US/Liberal government slant so you would agree with the pictorial form of “incisive poignant comments“.

Of course ‘incisive’ and ‘poignant’ are not words I would use. I tend to think of these type of cartoons as very undergrad and generally say more about the author than the subject; but fine, you like them so enjoy.

  • Dear Kev,

I sent a response this am.

    Have you received it.

  • Dear Kev,

It looks as if you did not receive y earlier positing.

I was a little annoyed at you having a go at the parent’s of Daele and her for having that name and because she was critical of the US plan to test Stealth Bombers in the NT and use the bombing ranges there.

Her retort to your attack was well timed and it was nice of her to point out to you that she was the daughetr of a Vietnam Veteran and an ex army nurse. It goes to show that you we all have backgrounds that shape our views on life.

I am a son of a Korean and Vietnam War veteran and has a mother who was a casualty of the first A bomb attack. It was not a pleasant experience for her.

She does not have a vengeful bone in her body even though she might have good reason to be a little angry. She was a victim of “total war”. Father, brother killed, sister and her injured. They were all civilians but I suppose that had the bad luck to be born on the losing side. She understands that even though she was only 14 at the time. She is not a whinger.

Their political leaders made the decision to go to war and the populace as usual had to wear the result. I suppose it is like the old saying “my country right or wrong”.

Going to War should be the last resort for any civilised nation.

With your life experience I would hope that you would have moderated some of the more aggressive aspects of your personality and mellowed.
