Howard visits troops

Prime Minister John Howard has made a risky, top secret visit to Afghanistan to tell elite Australian soldiers fighting the Taliban and al-Qaeda that their country is proud of them.
Wearing a brown leather bomber jacket and accompanied by defence force chief Angus Houston, Mr Howard donned body armour and a helmet to land at Camp Russell in central Afghanistan, home to up to 190 Special Air Services (SAS) and Commandos sent to the country in August to stem the rise of insurgent forces.
After inspecting the camp, built from scratch by the Australians and named after Andrew Russell, Australia’s only military casualty in the war on terror in Afghanistan, Mr Howard told about 80 of the troops he was grateful for the job they were doing. “No-one should be taking Australian fighting men and women for granted. I don’t and Australians don’t,” he told them during a short address in the camp mess.

  • God it was embarrassing watching Howard. To think we have to roll him out to the world stage makes me cringe !

  • I here ya Tracey. Embarrassing. The man haqs hated so much for so long he seams to have shrunk !

  • I have a different view. I have never counted physical stature as the mark of a man

  • Tracey,

I have to agree with you.

I remember when he visited Bagdhad recently. He looked quite comical in helmet and flak jacket. The ambassador was wearing a suit and I noticed one of the soldiers (female) was not wearing a helmet etc. I would have thought that he would have brazened it out and worn a suit and shown the ‘enemy” that he was no afraid to walk on their territory. it shows how safe the country is from ‘terrorists”. I thought it was “good” over there that things such as security were getting better. The images of him surrounded by guards and speeding through the streets give lie to the propaganda that is peddled about the safety of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Still remember the lies peddled about the children overboard etc. We might get charged with sedition if we keep this up.

The IR laws may bring him down. I can only hope that he listens to the BBQ set and realize that a “fair go” is every Australian’s right not just the rich and powerful.

  • Peter you obviously get all your knowledge of military matters from cheap comics or similar.
If you were in charge of the PM’s personal security in a war zone, would you let him wander round without a helmet and body armour?

The rest of your crap is just trolling.

  • Tracey and Barry. You must be lost. You’re welcome if you can contribute to the debate but if you persist with childish insults then you need to find yourselves again. Maybe at Tim Dunlop’s or Southerly Buster…you know the type of blogs I mean…somewhere where your childish comments are greeted with simpering, unworldy and naive agreement.

    That place is NOT here.

Peter, PQ says it for me. The PM doesn’t get a choice. In a war zone his SECDET Commander calls the shots and he would’ve been sacked on the spot if he had allowed the PM to move unprotected.

If you don’t understand this simple, well known protocol then what else are you having trouble understanding?

And yes…you are trolling. You keep saying the same things even in the face of my having been on the spot you still claim your second hand knowledge is the wiser.

  • Dear Kev,

Never knew that you served in a security detail for the PM.

Maybe I have missed something about your army record and history.

You may want to enlighten me.

Why was the embassaor wearing a business suit. I supposed he was expendable and so was the female digger. I suppose a politician’s life is worth a lot more than a digger or a diplomat.

  • Dear Kev, I am sorry that I am trolling.

I am using you as my role model ie an expert on everything from WMD’s, Capital punishment etc

  • Smug little trog aren’t ya Peter. Answer me this. Show me the casualty list that you based this statement on.

“should think carefully about committing the sons of the poor, blacks and Hispanics etc to die for their country. ”

  • I support the execution immediately of the ruling HoWARdian military junta. Only then can Australia go back to being an enlightened progessive socialist utopia, administered by peace-loving souls that worship the right for all creatures to live in harmony, with peace and justice. Hail Gaia!

  • Dear kev,

Put in your search engine “US Vietnam war casualties” and you will see some interesting figures about ethnicity, religion etc. Interesting comments about the over-representation of blacks and their casualty rate in army and marine combat units.

If you cannot find it then I will get the full address for you.

It may remove the blinkers from your eyes.

Incidentally no return fire from my South African mate Gary.

    Is he gun shy?

Incidentally I looked up the samizata site. Not impressed Kev.

You will need to do better than that rubbish to back your idea that the war in Iraq is being won. Recall Rumsfeld saying some 6 months ago that the insurgency was in its last throes.

I hope the widows and grieving have noted that comment.

  • Well Peter show the Stats.

  • You were refering to GW2 casualtys.

  • Dear Gary,

    Please explain?

Look up the sites. I expect that you should be able to find “Iraq Coalitin Casualties” ans “US Vietnam War casualties”.

Just type that in and then go from there.

You will be better informed and just as ignorant.

  • No Peter I’m fishing to see if your opinion has more depth then just biased assertions. I’ve read such claims many times and never have they been supported by facts. You could be the first.

“You will be better informed and just as ignorant.”

    He! Oxymoron.
